For those of you who were intending to attend the Great Hunt and had to postpone 'til next year: you didn't miss anything.
Yesterday's weather was gorgeous, and I saw ONE deer. A tiny button buck with a semi-recent injury that I won't shoot on principle.
Today's weather was horrid: low 30s, windy, and intermittent rain/snow showers. We saw ... NO deer. Almost sixteen hours of hunting in two days; two of us out yesterday and three today.
I'm sore and exhausted and not sure if I'll go out again tomorrow. The hills and mud have taken their toll.

The trail camera out back keeps getting pictures of the little guys, one or two points....we've got tons of tracks, we've debated moving the camera, but at leat we're getting something. None of these guys are big enough to provide much meat though.
Suck and fail reporting for duty...
Er, I have been swerving around those 4-legged hoodmagnets all week.
I say we buy a deer, set him loose at the SooperSekret range, then grill him for dinner.
Sorry to hear that. This year it was hunt. . FAIL,here as well. The land I could hunt on two weekends had weather that would take down a container ship, and the other spot had a death in theirimmediate family, and I didn't think it appropriate to show up with rifle in hand as they grieved. I didn't even SEE a deer other than a button buck.
Better luck next year!
Ruth - I don't have a game camera yet, but I may keep an eye out for one as the season winds down. Entertainment value if nothing else.
Wally - any deer released at the SSR would be in too many pieces to make a meal. And your suck and fail has been excused, repeatedly. Life happens to all of us.
Brigid - fortunately, while NY has many things wrong with it, their hunting seasons are Serious Business. Bow season opens in mid-October and runs about five weeks, whereon regular (gun) season opens and runs three weeks, which is follow by another week or ten days of late bow/muzzleloader. For those of us that hunt all three, it's about two full months of being able to grab an implement and head for the woods... and I've got at least two weeks left before I'm truly skunked. Time will tell...
Sorry things haven't gone well for you and the others, but as I said after our failed hog hunt, that's why it's called hunting, not killing... sigh
Bummed I couldn't make it but somewhat glad I didn't waste the $140 (or something like that) for the out of state license!
I'm still trying to find some time to get out locally...
NFO - precisely what I said to my wife.
Cybrus - if there had been more of us there, who knows? It's a big chunk of property, and with only three hunters you can only cover so much. But really, no way to know. We had a good time after the hunt, though, and I haven't laughed so hard in quite some time.
