When trying to shoot at and get away from a top-of-the-food-chain large predator:
(A) carry more than a 9mm single-stack subcompact
(B) make sure it doesn't jam every other round
Yep, had one of those dreams last night. Right carry piece. Right round count per mag.

But aren't subcompact 9mms _designed_ for dealing with humans?
One time I went on a hike in the Absarokas (just north of Yellowstone, I guess they are)--we followed bear tracks all the way up the hill. Meanwhile, my brilliant roommate and camping partner had brought along his 6-shot Sig .380, which would be just about enough to make a bear go from "angry" to "really angry"...
IF it doesn't start with a .4 Just sayin... :-)
Or you could have rung the bells and scared him off, or hit him with the pepper spray, but that might have 'hurt' him...
