Following up

... to my post of Jan. 9.

Because MrsZ wanted to tell some people in person, I haven't made anything publicly official yet... but she's telling them now, so here it is

We're leaving NY.

It's not just about guns; it's about taxes, opportunity, open space, and nanny-state crap. The latest legislation should tell you all there's a problem: closed-door discussion, no public discussion period, and criminilization of gun owners everywhere. This isn't about any one thing; it's time for us to leave a diseased state.

We started making serious moves in this direction the day after Cuomo said, "Confiscation is an option."

We'll be putting our house on the market in the next few months. We've started applying for jobs in many places, and will likely go to wherever one of us finds a job that can pay the bills. Salt Lake City is a strong option, but nothing is set in stone yet.

If you're in a free state and see something that might tweak our interest, please let us know (zercool/gmail). I've got 8 years of 911 dispatch and 5 years of tech support prior to that; MrsZ has an Ivy League degree in Animal Science and five years of DNA lab experience. There's more, obviously, but that's the high points. Wish us luck, and good thoughts/prayers won't be turned down.

Let the adventure begin!

I don't know if its up her alley, but there's some sort of wonderfully controversial lab in Hamilton MT. Land is a bit pricey in close, at least for Montana, but theres always room for a new rugged outdoorsy type there, plus all the fantasyland wonder that goes with Western Montana (I grew up north of Missoula). If Bitterroot county doesn't have an opening, S&R may, or any number of localities.

Wolfman: MT is certainly on the list of possibles.

If you head out to Utah, drop me a line (you can always put "DO NOT POST" in a comment and give me contact info) EJ and I have a good friend there that might be of help in scouting out where to live and such.

If you wish to just wander over to IND, home of the lifetime concealed permit? It may be flat but it has the best people I've ever lived around. You and your wife are welcome to bunk here while checking out the area.

As my Dad would say - You have GUMPTION. Go for it and get out of New York while you can.

Good luck! We're not quite in a position to pick up and move, but with this we've started looking in that direction. Gonna take us a bit though....

Understood and can't blame you. Any interest in the South and/or getting back into dispatching?

Avoid Colorado, at least for a while, to see how it all shakes out. Democrats in control, all hooting to be like NY.

I know people say "Austin is full up", but if you want to move here (or even to Texas in general), I'm pretty sure we can make room for you guys. I'd sure welcome you.

We have a good economy, we're pro-gun, and we also have a notable lack of snow.

Good for you, Zercool. I left 8 years ago and haven't looked back.

I live in southern Utah but as I'm retired my days are basically my own. I'll peruse the employment sections and if I see anything I'll pass it along. I will also offer my services as scout and contact in the area. My wife is a native and I went to HS here. We moved away to California for 30 years but have returned and I couldn't be happier. We're one of those few states that allows resident Utah CCW holders to carry in schools. That includes teachers. First time I went to the hardware store and saw rifles and pistols being sold I knew I was in the right place.
Wherever you guys end up you are absolutely doing the right thing. I should have left California 10 years ago. Please let me know if I can help in any way.

Raleigh/Durham, NC has some bio, pharma and tech options.

Been a refugee from MA since 1990. Don't rule out the Ohio River area. Even in Ohio it's OK for us gun cranks, and Kentucky in particular is very welcoming. Not so darn much snow, either!

Thanks to Eli Lily, there's stuff along this line in IN.

I'm only speculating here. Try moving to Virginia. Much more level-headed about most things. Government contracting is big here(I spent 12 years as a contractor), so I imagine you could put your tech support skills to good use. As for Mrs. Z, while I'd not envy her commute, NIH is just across the Potowomac, and the I-270 corridor has all manner of biotech companies scattered about.

Do not even CONSIDER moving to Maryland though.

You could do worse than Virginia.

You want a 911 job, here's a great place to look. Remember, no state income tax, Gov. just promised to support 2nd amend. Just sayin'
