Hunting Guns

As I mentioned yesterday, the Mossberg isn't going with me tomorrow; I'll be taking my T/C Omega muzzleloader and Contender pistol. But I also need (prefer) to take a pistol; both for two- and four-legged reasons.

My choices are:
- 1911 .45ACP
- S&W 642 .38spl
- S&W 21 .44Spl
- S&W M&P40c

I have retention-type holsters for all but the 642, which would be zipped into a coat pocket. Which should I take, and why?

Discuss.

So many choices! For my response, it depends on what kind of 4 legged predators you have in the area. For example, I grew up with griz and mountain lions being the dominant sharp toothed mammals. I carried a .357 Mag, with hot 180 gr handloads, but never quite put full faith in it (it was all I had at the time). That M21 would be much more apt, in fact I support that strongly in mountain lion areas. Either of the autos should be good in black bear and big kitty woods, and pack more rounds. But theres something about carrying a big bore revolver while hunting, so the .44 gets my vote.

Wolf - good point. Griz is not a concern out here in NY. There have been signs of black bear on the farm though; they are in season and I will have a tag. I'm quite confident that my muzzleloader would handle one just as well as it does a deer. Given that the rifle is only one shot, the .38 might not be quite as much oomph as I'd want if a pissed-off bear starts up my tree...

.44SPL. All the way

+1 on the .44 Special. It'll handle everything up to and including bear as well as moose, and you won't have any issues with malfs as you would with a 1911.
