Pale Red

I can't use the word that begins with "P" and ends with that stuff a pen is filled with, because it's trademarked by the folks at Komen... who has yanked their funding of Planned Parenthood (earmarked exclusively for cancer screenings) because of a new rule (with a new, pro-life VP) prohibiting funding of agencies under investigation. (PP is under investigation for maybe possibly using tax dollars to fund abortion services.)

MuleBreath has a pretty clear write-up on the situation. Read the whole thing (especially his links), then click on back here.

Look, I know abortion is a hot-button topic for lots of us. I personally am pro-choice.
I believe abortion can be misused like any other procedure or product, and perhaps often is. It's not birth control, and shouldn't be used that way. I don't pretend to know When Life Begins. I believe condoms should be available from the school nurse. I believe safer-sex education should be taught in schools.

Some of you don't like that. And you know what? You're allowed to. These are MY beliefs.

At the core of it, "My body, my choice!" rings true. I don't have the right to tell ANYONE - man, woman, or other - what they can and can't do with their body.

Fighting cancer is an admirable goal. And it's one I support. But I won't be doing it through pink ribbons anymore. Someone I know running in a Komen Race? Nope, sorry. And I'll politely explain why.

Meantime, I'm taking Tbogg's suggestion and dropping a few bucks in the PP bucket* with a thank-you note going to Ms. Handel over at Komen:

* - make sure you click the "honorary giving" tab to get the option to send a thank-you. I made mine in honor of "All Women".

I actually have never been a fan of the Susan G Koman folks. They have a long history of not spending there money where're it should be spent, so I find their actions comical. I do agree though that abortion and cancer are separate issues. Why on earth would you punish a person fighting for their life, regardless of what you think the company did or didn't do? I find it much safer to give small. I would rather help a local woman or family then a big corporation. I know, I know, it's for research and that takes money and I am all for it, but I don't trust them. I don't trust any of them:)

Komen's turned into another AARP, once a Charity, now an Industry to perpetuate itself. That's why I just throw cash into the Bucket at Christmas and let Salvation Army feed people with it.
